Pulitzer Prize winner Caroline Shaw returns to Portland with dancer-choreographer Vanessa Goodman to present Graveyards and Gardens from the Bodecker skate bowl. Co-produced by Shaw and Goodman, this new work examines memory as a process of reconstruction rather than an exact recall of fixed events, embracing the various elaborations, distortions, and omissions.

“A dance. A concert. A curious analogue-driven performance experience. A visual and sonic album of reconstructed memories and distortions. Revealed in an immersive environment of nature and technology. The warm glow lure of antiquated innovations and embodied experience. It’s a living album that continues to fold and unfold into itself. Digging deep into the beauty of how the body remembers.”—Nicole Mion

SANCTUARIES: A JAZZ CHAMBER OPERA
September 7, 8, 9, 2021
Location: Veterans Memorial Coliseum Pavilion

Gentrification in Portland and the city’s redlining past go under the microscope in Darrell Grant’s jazz opera, Sanctuaries, a new work commissioned and produced by Third Angle New Music. This world premiere, site-specific opera is composed by critically acclaimed jazz pianist Darrell Grant (who ‘Gramophone’ has called “a composer of substance”), with libretto by two-time National Poetry Slam Individual Champion and Oregon Poet Laureate Anis Mojgani and stage direction by LA-based opera director Alexander Gedeon. Blending elements of jazz, spoken word, and devised theater, Sanctuaries speaks to the experience of displaced residents of color in Portland's historically Black Albina district. Originally set to premiere in April of 2020, Sanctuaries will now debut at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum Pavilion on September 7th, with two additional performances on September 8th and 9th, all beginning at 8:30 pm.
