We are seeking singers for A Fond Farewell, a concert of songs by Elliott Smith, arranged by six leading composers. The performances will take place at Lincoln High School (Elliott’s school), with stage direction by Jonathan Walters, Artistic Director of Hand2Mouth Theatre. A quartet of Third Angle instrumentalists will accompany these arrangements. The performances will take place during our 2017-18 Season (September 2017 through May 2018).
The composers represent a wide range of styles, and their arrangements will likely present real challenges for the singers. Thus, we’ve chosen audition pieces that will give us a sense of your ability to handle this kind of stylistic range.
Your audition will be videotaped in order for our composers to provide input on the final choices. You will also be asked to take part in a few minutes of simple acting/performance instruction during this audition. You will be asked to send your resume electronically when signing up for an audition time.
Singers who are selected for the performances will be paid.
Antique Windfall by Jacob Cooper
Jacob is one of our project composers. We’ve chosen this song from Jacob’s recent CD as an example of the kind of music that our singers may have to deal with for this project. The song includes a soundtrack accompaniment. We are providing two versions of the soundtrack; one with a click track, one without. It’s your choice which soundtrack you prefer to use at the audition; both will be available.
The soundtrack begins at measure 14 in the printed part. The click track begins at measure 23.
We’ve included the commercial recording of Mellissa Hughes singing this song as an example of one possible interpretation
We are looking for the following in this song:
o Accurate pitch
o Accurate rhythm
o An interpretative sense that reflects the directions of the composer (i.e. dynamics)
Between The Bars by Elliott Smith
With this song, we’re looking for individuality, for your personality to come through, to see how you connect with Elliott’s music. It’s a truly iconic song by Elliott, and we’ve chosen it to hear how you can handle a pop tune. You may sing this unaccompanied, or you may bring a guitar or other instrument to accompany yourselves. You can sing this in a range comfortable for your voice.
